Invited to the party!

Picture the scene.  You’re in an upper room with others from your team, none of whom are in the mood for conversation.  You’re waiting.. waiting.  Suddenly your senses are bombarded with a pyrotechnic display of sound, colour and movement..   flames like tongues appearing from nowhere and landing on the heads of the people around you!  Simultaneously you all start speaking in languages you’ve never spoken before.. the words, the sentences start falling from your lips uncontrollably, there’s a sense of excitement, buzz.. so this is it!?!  This is what the waiting was all about.. the promised gift, receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit!  Before you know what’s happening, you’re on your feet, compelled to move out of the room, away from the building and into the streets, amongst the people, sharing, speaking out the message..  a movement has started!

This might sound like a scene from a sci-fi movie but it captures something of the events in Acts 2: 1 – 4, the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit landed in the hearts and minds of the followers of Jesus, transforming, renewing attitudes, behaviours and actions.

The gift of the Holy Spirit released, empowered and equipped a group of ordinary Galileans to stand up and speak out, about a new world order.  The message spoke of justice and mercy, peace and hope. The invitation was given to all – crossing cultural and social divides, with a heart towards the poor, the vulnerable, the marginalised.  It was a message that confounded many of the religious professionals and empires of the day and became a movement that travelled the world, leaving transformed individuals and communities in its wake.  So was birthed the Early Church.  That was then… Back to the present.

You’re invited to the birth-day of the church!  What ‘gift/talent’ do you bring this year to the party?

🔥 Will you bring your creativity to communicate against injustice?
🔥 Will you bring your voice to speak out on behalf of the voiceless?
🔥 Will you advocate on behalf of those who have no human rights?
🔥 Will you organise a rally, will you network, will you mediate, will you write?
🔥 What do you bring?

The Holy Spirit is always prompting, always nudging us to engage, to make a tangible difference in the lives of others, wherever we are.  Gifts left unwrapped, unused or hidden benefit no one, least of all you.

So exercise your ‘you-shaped’ gifts and talents, and join in the party!

Happy birthday to YOU!
